In typical John Downey fashion he left the building full of garbage, including 31 large McDonalds soda cups, 9 plungers and a stack of unopened mail filled with collections notices!

John also gave out massive amounts of store credit shortly before closing his doors. One last screw you to the community from John Downey.

After nearly 5 years of alerting the community of Mr. John Thomas Downey's immoral business practices, it appears that MediaMax has gone out of business. Whether or not this had anything to do with the team here at MediaSlob.com is irrelevant, the fact is, the community is safe again.

This is good news for the community as a whole, but sadly I may never get my money back...

As owner of MediaMax, John throws all business etiquette and ethics out the window to turn a buck.

This website was started for the same reason that you are here. We all have something in common. We have all been to MediaMax and left feeling as if we had been robbed, scammed, or cheated. This is a brief account of my story, feel free to share your stories on our Message Board.

While searching for information on John Thomas Downey I found little positive feedback. As a matter of fact, the only positive article I found came from the Press & Sun Bulletin. After reading the article, it became apparent that the author did little research and just wrote down everything John and his lovely wife, Sherry Brearley said. The article was completely erroneous. Similar to most of the words that come out of John Downey's mouth.

So you are asking yourself. If there was only one positive article, what else did you find? What makes this man the way he is? Why does he feel that he can do whatever he wants? Why does he feel he can take advantage of whoever he wants?

The answer is simple. Over the years many have sought justice. The problem is not only with John Downey but with the local authorities and court system. If anything, the system is set up in favor of the John Downeys of the world. John Downey has 2 pages dedicated to him on the Broome County Clerk's Website. These 2 pages date back to 1999, before some of the kids he is ripping off today were even born. John Downey has had numerous Civil Action Suits and Transcript Judgments filed against him since 1999.

John Downey seemingly has no morals. Since my first encounter with John he has knowingly made two false police statements. Both times accusing me of being at MediaMax. Both times being wrong. John Downey also contacted the website I was running my message board through and had that removed, as well as the first attempt at a MediaSlob.com MySpace. In an attempt to get his side of the story out, John called the Press & Sun Bulletin. In this instance, my question to John would be: Are you trying to put yourself out of business?

I would like to be able to say some good things about John Downey, but the simple reality of the situation is, I have never heard anything good about John Downey. The few times that I have come in contact with him, he has displayed arrogance, he has lied, he has become overly aggressive, and he has bad breath. Some say that John is no more than a puppet controlled by his wife, Sherry Brearley, who really runs the store. But when I search for information, it all keeps coming back John.

Again I highly encourage anyone who has been taken advantage of by John Downey to seek the assistance of the Attorney General. It is not fair to the community or its children that John Downey can continue to exhibit this kind of behavior. It is painfully obvious that John Downey did not attend a business ethics class. And, as you can see by the letter written to the Attorney General below, he did not take English 100 either.

MediaMax is a tin building located in the run down part of Endicott next to the Salvation Army. Convenient for John Downey, because the majority of the children he takes advantage of are more than likely regulars at the Salvation Army. The stated purpose of MediaMax is to provide people in Endicott, Binghamton, Vestal, and Johnson City a place to buy, sell, and trade video games and such. But it is more than that. A recent MediaMax ad in an Ithaca paper stated that John is now looking to buy knifes, swords, and guns. With all the current problems in Endicott, is this the kind of business we need? As for the Ithaca paper, I warn you, John Downey has been known to take out advertisements in local publications and not pay for them.

8/26/06 - Went to MediaMax looking for PS2 internet adapter. John told me he didn’t have any in stock, but they come in all the time and he would reserve one. I agreed and he told me I needed to pay up front. I didn't like the idea but I wanted the product He assured me that he was the best at getting things and that “Santa comes to him when he needs something.”

9/25/2006 - After not hearing from John for a month I called inquiring about availability of an adapter. Not saying who I was John told me that he had an adapter in stock with software and it was available for purchase.

Later that day - I went to MediaMax with a friend. I asked if he had the internet adapter, he responded “Yes, are you the one who called?” I said "Yes." He placed the adapter and software disc on the counter. He said it was $29.95. I then said “Is it common practice for you to take peoples money and tell them you will call them when you get a product and screw them out of their money?” At this point I took out the receipt he had given me 8/26/06. He grabbed the receipt and both the adapter and disc and told me to get out of his store. I then refused to leave without a refund. He got very angry and came out from the counter and confronted me. He threatened to call the police. I said "call the police and tell them what you did. You’re stealing my money." After yelling and cursing at me he phoned the police. The police said that they have had numerous complaints about John Downey and MediaMax but the only thing I could do is report him to the Better Business Bureau and take him to small claims court. I have decided to take it one step further and attempt to alert the public about the unethical business practices of John Downey. At this point I have not received the product I paid for or my money back.

John Downey may be the biggest scumbag in the community, but surely isn't the only one. Let us know what local businesses have ripped you off.
